How to Make Stripes to Socks

Like most of the time, I made myself a project out of my son's Oompa Loompa chorus character at for the Willy Wonka Jr Show from his drama club at school. The socks were supposed to be striped. Since I made the costume plus I am a little picky for perfection, I wanted the socks to match the color of the shirt. Guess what I could not find any to match so I decided to make it myself. Projeeect!!!

This is what I did and it turn out perfect!

Materials

  • plain color socks
  • Fabric paint
  • Brush
  • Cardboard to fit into socks
  • Tape (blue tape works great)
   If mixing colors
  • Old sock
  • Mixing bowl
  • Pen and paper

DIY :)

 If mixing colors:
  1. Count by drops of fabric paint used to mix. Then write down in #1 how many drops of each color.
  2. In an old sock make a patter of paint from #1 through the color desired.
  3. Each time you add a color make sure to write down the amount of drops per color.
  4. Keep going until a little off of the desired color. The color changes after it dried out.
  5. Select the desired formula of the mixing colors and replicate multiple of times to have enough paint to paint the socks.
  6. Follow with (1.) below.

If NOT mixing colors:
  1. Cut a cardboard about 2" wider than the sock. This will allow the color to cover enough. When the sock is stretch to fit it will keep the color without the original color spots.
  2. Place the tape over vertical or horizontal to make the stripes. There is many ways to do this:
              - You can measure the spaces between each tape.
              - You can cover the sock with the tape. Then remove every other to make the
                spaces in between  each tape.
              - Or you can average/estimate by looking at it the space in between each tape.

      3.   Start painting with the brush and the fabric paint of desire color. Cover well
by painting it two or three times if needed.
      4.   Let it dry before removing the tape and cardboard.

USE IT!!!
